November is #nativeheritagemonth — 🌽 Learn about one of the most important crops grown in Shawnee villages before removal westward, lokhaana taami (flour corn). “When we were being re-moved, no one told our corn that she was to be moved (from the Ohio Valley) to Oklahoma. Shawnee corn was bred in Appalachia and along the waterways that feed the Ohio River; it was never meant to be grown in Oklahoma.” — said Chief of the Shawnee Tribe Ben Barnes.

This past year, the Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals published Volume 2 of the "Status of Tribes and Climate Change Report". On pages #56 -59, read about the Shawnee Tribe's attempts at growing traditional corn and how it has been impacted by climate change.
